Let me say one thing first, I loved the XBLA game LIMBO. The design, atmosphere, and surprisingly brutal deaths just pulled me in and pushed me to continue even though some of the puzzles were a bit tough at times. The only complaint I had is the ending.
For those that played it, you played to the end, crashed through the glass in slo-mo, and walked over to the girl in which the game ends and you are left to interpret what it all meant. This post is not to discuss your interpretation because frankly, no well thought out answer is wrong. What I do want to discuss is that it was the wrong ending completely, but the “right” ending in my opinion probably would have angered the typical core gamer.
After breaking through the glass and waking up again I wanted so badly for the character to run to the right for a bit and then realize that they are at the beginning of the game again. An infinite looping game. With a title like LIMBO it would have made total sense and as much as some people would have hated it (“I can’t finish the game? RAWR”), they would have to recognize it for being unique and that ending would have left little for interpretation. A game that artistic could have gotten away with it.
